I visited East Timor in April of l974 when it was still a
remote Portuguese colony. After the l975 Indonesian invasion,
my photographs of the peaceful village life of the Timorese
became a valuable resource for human right groups around the
world. During the Indonesian occupation over 200,000 Timorese,
almost a 3rd of the population, were killed. The will of the
Timorese people to be free and the support the international
solidarity movement resulted in a UN referendum in August of
l999. East Timor voted for independence and is now the world's
newest country.
My book of photographs of East Timor and essays was published
by Between the Lines in Toronto in May of 2004.
